Responsive Doubles in Bridge

Competing when both sides are bidding and you have values but no clear suit

A Responsive Double is a competitive bidding tool used when partner has made a takeout double (or overcall) and the opponent raises their suit. Rather than guessing which suit to bid, you double to tell partner: "I have values but no clear single suit—you pick." The concept is similar to a takeout double, but it is made by the advancer (the partner of the takeout doubler) rather than by the doubler themselves.

For example, if the auction goes (1♥) – Dbl – (2♥) and you hold 6–10 HCP with length in both minors but no five-card suit to bid directly, a double here is responsive. It shows scattered values across the unbid suits and asks partner to choose where to play. Most partnerships agree to play responsive doubles through 3♠ by agreement.

When to Use a Responsive Double

Use a responsive double when all of the following conditions are met:

How It Works

After Partner's Takeout Double

The most common responsive double scenario: an opponent opens, partner doubles for takeout, and the next opponent raises.

West North (Partner) East South (You)
1♥ Dbl 2♥ Dbl (responsive)

Your double shows 6–10 HCP with length in the unbid suits (spades, diamonds, and clubs) but no clear single suit to bid. Partner picks the best spot.

After Partner's Overcall

Responsive doubles also apply when partner overcalls and the opponent raises. Here your double shows the two other unbid suits.

West North (Partner) East South (You)
1♦ 1♥ 2♦ Dbl (responsive)

Your double shows values with both black suits (spades and clubs—the two unbid suits) without a clear preference. Partner bids their longer or stronger black suit.

What Partner Does Next

Partner's Hand Action
Minimum takeout double Bid their best unbid suit at the cheapest level
Medium strength (15–17 HCP) Bid their best unbid suit with a jump, or cuebid
Maximum (18+ HCP) Jump to game or make a forcing bid

Example Hand

Your Hand (South)

♠ 5 4
♥ Q 8 3
♦ K J 7 4
♣ Q 9 6 3

HCP: 9  |  Shape: 2-3-4-4  |  Key feature: Both minors, no 5-card suit

The Auction

WestNorth (Partner)EastSouth (You)
1♠ Dbl 2♠
Dbl (responsive)

Why double? You have 9 HCP and four cards in each minor, but bidding 3♣ or 3♦ on a four-card suit at the three level is a guess. A responsive double lets partner pick the better minor (or bid hearts if that is their suit). If partner bids 3♣ or 3♦, you are happy to pass. If partner bids 3♥, you also have three-card support—a fine spot.
