The Story Behind Bridge Buddy

It started with a simple goal: I wanted to learn bridge properly. As someone diving into the world of contract bridge, I found myself overwhelmed by the conventions, the bidding sequences, and the partnership communication that makes bridge so fascinating - and so challenging.

I needed a way to practice the fundamentals without the pressure of a live game. I wanted instant feedback on my bids. I wanted to drill specific conventions until they became second nature.

"What if I could build a practice partner that would always be available, always patient, and always honest about my mistakes?"

Around the same time, I was exploring the world of Large Language Models and the emerging practice of "vibe coding" - using AI assistants to help write code. I saw an opportunity to learn multiple things at once:

Three Goals, One Project:

1
Bridge bidding - by building hands and analyzing optimal bids
2
Modern AI development - by working alongside Claude and other LLMs
3
Full-stack development - by creating a real, working application

What emerged is My Bridge Buddy - an interactive bridge bidding trainer that teaches Standard American Yellow Card (SAYC) through practice. The AI evaluates every bid, explains what the optimal choice would have been, and helps you build the pattern recognition that experienced players take for granted.

Whether you're a complete beginner learning your first responses to 1NT, or an intermediate player working on Blackwood and Jacoby Transfers, I hope this tool helps you on your bridge journey - just as building it has helped me on mine.
